罗氏的科学家三次获得诺贝尔生理学奖。罗氏在瑞士的巴塞尔、美国的纳特利和帕罗阿托等地设有大型科研中心。其中，罗氏巴塞尔的中枢神经系统和心血管疾病研究中心和美国的基因研究中心在国际医药界享有很高的声誉。
罗氏的药品生产部门历史悠久，主要生产治疗中枢神经系统疾病、传染病、炎症、心血管疾病、肿瘤、病毒感染、皮肤病、肥胖症等的各类药物。
罗氏成功地收购了一些国际大医药公司，壮大自身实力。其中包括：收购了美国最先进的生物工程公司基因技术公司的大部分股权，以加强罗氏在基因工程——这个医药工业最尖端领域里的领先地位；收购了尼古拉斯公司的非处方药品部门和费森斯公司，使罗氏成为欧洲非处方药品市场中占有市场份额最大的公司；1994年收购了辛太克斯医药公司，使罗氏在抗感染和****药物方面实力倍增。2001年，罗氏和日本中外制药宣布联手成立一个领先的以研究为导向的日本制药公司，这是一个全功能和以日本为基地的跨国公司，位列世界第2大药品销售市场——日本市场的第5位。
罗氏从1968年设立医疗诊断部门后，这一部门就以惊人的速度发展起来。该部门生产的试剂被广泛应用在医学免疫学试验中，如妊娠试验、肝炎测试、艾滋病病毒测试等。1994年，罗氏的生物医学实验室与美国全国健康实验室合并，成立了世界上规模最大临床医学实验室组织——美国实验室组织，罗氏拥有其49.9%的股份。在医疗诊断方面，罗氏另一个成绩卓著的研究机构是罗氏分子实验室。该实验室正致力于聚合酶链状反应技术（PCR）的研究，这一技术能够将同一基因或DNA断片重复复制，可以广泛应用于基础研究、艾滋病、结核病、白血病的诊断及环境测试方面。1998年初，罗氏彻底完成了对宝灵曼公司的兼并，吸收了这家公司在产品方面的优势，一跃成为医药诊断领域的先导。
维生素和精细化工是罗氏第三大业务。罗氏是世界上最大的维生素和胡萝卜素产品生产商，这一地位罗氏自1934年成功地以工业法合成维生素C那一刻起就取得了。

2003年的“非典”，已经让人们认识了它。随着禽流感病例不断增加的报道，随着世界卫生组织对达菲的“肯定”，随着日本和欧美国家对达菲大规模的囤积，它再次闯入人们的视野，掀起了一场又一场更激烈的争论。
达菲是一种有效的、常用的流感治疗药品，可以大大减少并发症的发生和抗生素的使用，使用越早，效果越好。对人类威胁最大的是H5N1禽流感病毒，而世界卫生组织推荐达菲作为政府应对可能的人禽流感大流行的储备用药；在中国，达菲已被列为《人禽流感诊疗方案(2005版)》的治疗用药。这主要基于3方面的考虑：
理论上“行得通”
人禽流感病毒属甲型流感病毒，理论上讲，用于治疗人类甲型流感的药物，对人禽流感可能有效，从这一点看，达菲是潜在的治疗人禽流感的药物，因而，在这方面有研究价值及潜在的应用价值。
动物实验“有用”
达菲对小鼠感染H5N1和H9N2都有明显抑制作用，可迅速降低小鼠体内和肺组织内禽流感病毒的滴度，防止病毒向脑部扩散，降低死亡率。
治疗人禽流感“有效”
在亚洲地区，达菲已被用于治疗人禽流感病毒的感染者。越南等国发现，患者只要在感染初期服用，其症状会在2天内减轻。
达菲可否预防禽流感
禽流感来势汹汹，自青海发生禽流感疫情以来，辽宁、湖南、安徽、内蒙古、新疆宁夏、云南也出现疫情，湖南和安徽各有1例死于禽流感。于是，有很多人希望，通过服用达菲来预防禽流感。这样行吗？
中山大学药学院教授龙启才：
达菲是通过抑制神经氨酸酶的活性，起到抑制病毒在人体内扩散，包括在呼吸系统扩散的作用，从而打破病毒感染循环过程。
既然神经氨酸酶在甲型、乙型流感病毒上都存在，达菲又是以“神经氨酸酶”作为“靶子”，那么，理所当然，达菲对甲型及乙型流感病毒感染的病例应该都有效。而H5N1禽流感病毒属于甲型病毒，因此，达菲也应是治疗H5N1感染的有效药物。
卫生部在《人禽流感诊疗方案(2005版)》的通知中明确指出，对与家禽或人禽流感患者有密切接触史者，一旦出现流感样症状，有条件者可在48小时以内，口服神经氨酸酶抑制剂作为预防用。这样的措施，虽然称为“预防”，但实际上，仍然是治疗作用，可以理解为，把火种遏制在星星之时，比扑灭于燎原之际更有效。
中国发展编辑
作为一家国际知名企业，罗氏与中国的关系可以追溯到半个多世纪以前。早在20世纪20年代，罗氏便在上海设立了办事处，揭开了罗氏在中国的第一页篇章。随着在华业务的蓬勃发展，1926年罗氏在上海成立了子公司，全面负责中国市场，直到1950年。1961年，罗氏重返中国。从此，罗氏与中国在科技和商业方面的往来不断增加。
改革开放以后，罗氏与中国的关系进一步得到加强。通过形式多样的技术交流，来自罗氏和中国国内的专家在药物、维生素、医疗诊断、香精香料等领域开展了广泛的技术交流，在1984年至1990年间共同参与了3个预混料合作项目的建设。
从1988年起，罗氏相继在北京、上海、广州设立了办事处，并开始计划在中国国内建立合资企业。1994年，罗氏于上海成立首家合资企业--上海罗氏制药有限公司。 作为第一个坐落于国家级生物医药科技产业基地内的制药公司，罗氏高超的科研、技术实力配以一流的生产装备，并以其高技术产品赢得了广泛的市场及信誉。
2000年罗氏在上海外高桥保税区注册了独资公司—罗氏诊断产品(上海)有限公司。
